Voter registration reveals Republicans continue to gain ground in Pennsylvania, with Democrats losing a number of registered voters to the opposing party, a Monday report citing Pennsylvania Department of State data.
The Republican Party of Pennsylvania (PAGOP) between the end of March and May 13, gained 10,152 new registered voters, according to Politics PA.
Additionally, the outlet reported, “Just over 18,000 Democrats have opted to change” their party affiliation to Republican, “while an additional 11,000 switched away from either party.”
Meanwhile, Republicans saw just “5,800 former party members switch to a Democratic registration with another 8,100 opting away from either party.”
Republicans saw the greatest gains in Fulton County, Bedford County and Potter County, while Democrats saw increases in registered voters living in Philadelphia County, Allegheny County and Lackawanna County.
The parts of Pennsylvania with the highest number of voters ending affiliation with either party were Pike County, Lehigh County and Monroe county, Politics PA reported.
The dwindling Democratic advantage over Republicans in voter registration comes following new statistics published following the April 23 primary, which revealed Democrats counted 3,895,223 registered voters within the state, while 3,499,524 Pennsylvanians were registered Republican.
Potentially signaling good fortune for Pennsylvania Republicans, an additional report by Pennsylvania Capital-Star reported the PAGOP “posted gains in 67 counties throughout the commonwealth” ahead of the primary elections in April.
While Republicans continue to gain ground, the same outlet later noted that the presidential campaign of Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the United Nations, received about a fifth of Republican primary votes in “the crucial Philadelphia collar counties” months after she suspended her campaign in a potential warning about Republican unity for former President Donald Trump.
The latest registration data comes as the former president continues to lead President Joe Biden in a series of polls that show him pulling ahead from the Democrat.
Polls similarly show Republican U.S. Senate nominee Dave McCormick, a former Trump administration official, just four percent behind U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).
